Stephen Hawking once wrote, “Only time (whatever that may be) will tell.” While it’s true we can’t predict the future, an exciting New Year is just beginning, and we can’t help but feel a little curious about what may lie ahead for the “IT” crowd. After all, time flies and technology seems to advance just as quickly! Here are a few of the trends shaping the IT Industry in 2024.
The Advancement of Generative AI in the Workplace
Since the start of the new decade, there has been a lot of buzz about the rising use of ChatGTP (the GTP stands for generative pretrained transformer), Facebook’s transition to the “Metaverse,” and the waitlist to beta test Adobe Firefly (a powerful tool for creating AI generated art). These and similar platforms have been pushing generative AI and AR/VR tech at an unprecedented pace.
While Pew Research Center notes that “a growing share of Americans express concern about the role artificial intelligence is playing in daily life,” CMS Newswire calls artificial intelligence “a remarkable achievement of human ingenuity,” in a recent article titled, “8 Benefits of Generative AI for Humanity.” According to the digital publication, “The future of humanity hinges on the harmonious collaboration between these two species,” especially in the workplace.
In “The Tech Trends That Will Shape the World in 2024,” Techopedia reports that generative AI will help shape “a more personalized digital world” by enhancing workplace collaboration and making the customer experience less transactional. This may include advanced AR/VR technologies to “foster in-office and remote collaboration,” and “increased implementation of AI solutions and other advanced technologies that improve building efficiency and make the workplace truly smart.”
Computing Takes a Quantum Leap
Once considered the stuff of science fiction, quantum computing is now a reality. According to Inc. this emerging technology will “dominate large-scale computing in 2024” and “has the potential to transform computing power as we know it, enabling us to solve complex problems at a previously unimaginable speed and scale.”
Fast Company adds that “quantum computing is leading the next technological revolution,” noting “companies including Google, Microsoft, IBM, Intel, and Honeywell are investing in the further development of quantum computers for industrial purposes.” This could have a major impact on IT and other industries. Reporting on the Technology Sector, Financial Times notes that, “The next generation of quantum computers will open a new world of possibilities, but also pose enormous risks to our online security.” Of course, only time will tell.
